Grice [Hayley Thompson]

I agree with Grice's point that connectives act differently in natural language than they do in logic. In natural language, connectives, especially when tying together separate clauses, usually place more emphasis on the relationship between the clauses than on these statements themselves.

I don't believe I disagree with many of Grice's ideas. I believe that many of his maxims happen so automatically in the minds of people with good social and conversational skills, they do not realize -when they flout or exploit a maxim, unless they intend on having a "non-cooperative conversation" and misinforming the other speaker.

One question I have about Grice's work, is what he classifies as non-participation in the cooperative principle, besides ending a conversation. Is lying considered cooperative?
